Getting started with AI in Excel

If Excel still feels shaky, build those basics before relying on AI for formulas, cleanup or charts. A learner needs to inspect the result and know when a normal Excel calculation is the safer choice. Compare courses by the work they ask you to do, not just total video time.

Find your starting point

Microsoft Excel 365 AI Mastery: ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude uses short sales, payroll and grading examples for formulas, troubleshooting and dashboards. Microsoft Excel Masterclass With ChatGPT, Copilot & AI goes wider, from spreadsheet basics to cleaning, workbook audits, dashboards and Python-assisted analysis. ChatGPT & AI for Microsoft Excel adds sample files, repeated exercises, Power Query and VBA help.

Copilot For Excel Fundamentals is an introductory tour of formatting, formulas, analysis and charts. Other courses add sample files, repeated exercises or broader workbook projects. Decide whether you need Excel basics first, a multi-tool overview or practice with formulas and messy data.

A formula demo, a sample-file exercise and a workbook audit give you different ways to find errors. Keep a known answer for comparison, use nonsensitive data and check which Excel or AI account the course requires.

A fictional example to try

Check a formula with a table you can count yourself

A fictional expense table has three rows: October 1, £12.50. October 2, £18.75. October 3, £12.50. The two equal amounts are separate purchases on different dates.

Try this prompt

Suggest an Excel formula to total these three expense rows. Explain which cells it uses. Keep every row and do not treat equal amounts on different dates as duplicates.

What a useful answer includes

  • The total is £43.75, with all three purchases included.
  • The formula points to the amount cells in your actual sheet.
  • The explanation agrees with the formula.
  • Repeated amounts stay in the table.
  • A duplicate check needs more information than the amount alone.

Before you pick a course

  • If you need help writing formulas, compare courses teaching formula explanation and checking.
  • If your main task is fixing messy data, start with cleaning and validation.
  • A browser AI course and an in-Excel Copilot course can require different accounts and workflows.
  • Check where the exercises happen.
  • Prefer exercises where you can inspect the sheet, formula and result rather than copy an answer without checking it.

Try this before you choose

Try a small sample sheet with a known total, one missing value and an inconsistent date. Use it to decide whether you need Excel foundations first, then compare the course's files, checking method and software requirements.
